Welcome to the Department
We would like to extend a warm welcome to one of the our newest members of the department, Irfan A. Asangani, Ph.D. Irfan joined the department as an Assistant Professor on October 1, 2015. He comes to us from the laboratory of Arul Chinnaiyan, M.D., Ph.D., who is an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, American Cancer Society Research Professor, and S.P. Hicks Endowed Professor of Pathology and Urology at the University of Michigan. During his time as a post-doctoral researcher in the Chinnaiyan lab, Irfan was the first author of publications appearing in high-profile journals such as the Molecular Cell, Nature, and Cell Cycle. Irfan earned his Ph.D. in Cancer Biology from Heidelberg University, Germany where he graduated summa cum laude. Prior to his time in Germany, Irfan earned both his BS and MS degrees in biochemistry from Madras University, India. Dr. Asangani has received multiple awards and honors, including the AACR Millennium Scholar in Training Award, the Prostate Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award and, most recently, the NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award. We are happy to welcome one of the newest members of the department, Junwei Shi, Ph.D. Junwei joined the department as an Assistant Professor on April 1, 2016. He earned his B.S. in Biotechnology from Sun Yat-sen University, in Guangzhou, China in 2008. He then entered the Molecular and Cellular Biology program at Stony Brook University, SUNY and after a year joined Christopher Vakoc’s laboratory to complete his thesis research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. Junwei received the National award for Outstanding Chinese student study abroad and the Stony Brook University Provost’s graduate student lecture award. Remarkably, his research as a graduate student resulted in 12 publications, including first author and co-first author publications in Nature, Nature Biotechnology, Genes & Development, Oncogene, and a review in Molecular Cell, as well as multiple co-author publications in Cell, Genes & Development, PNAS, and Molecular Cell.
